Rath Jatra / Car Festival


This spectacular chariot festival is held at the famous Jagannath temple at Puri. Rathyatra/Rathjata is also known as Car festival.  This festival is celebratedin the month of Asadha,according to the hindu calender, on the 2nd day of the lunar frot-night that falls during June-July every year.

A major hindu festival,rath jatra is annual observed all over India,however,orginated in Jagannath temple Puri in Odisha on the estern coast of the India,where it is still observed by entire population.

Usually the deities are worshipped within the temple, but on the day of Ratha Yatra the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra are transported to their aunt' s temple (Gundicha Mandir) which is situated at a distance of 2 km from their temple. On the day of the festival the three idol of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra are taken out in procession in three chariots named Nandighosh for Jagannath, Taladwaj for brother Balabhadra and debdolan for sister Subhadra. These three huge chariots are pulled by millions of devotees from Sree Mandir(Jagannath temple) to their aunt's templefor 9 days.And return back to Sreemandir(jagannath temple)after 9 days this journey called Bahuda jatra.
